When it comes to a profession of tutoring, many of the things might enter the mind where, why and how to start. Some of the tutors have a strong desire to help the students while some just have to earn money. It is often found that online tutoring is a mixture of these two kinds of tutors which is of course pretty much common. One of the trickiest ideas is to consider how much you need to charge for the tutoring services that you provide. The most complicated questions for the tutors are; what should they expect? How much should they earn? How much should they charge? Moreover, most importantly how can they decide their hourly rate?
A survey was conducted in 2013 by “The First Tutors” which has introduced the estimation that the private tutors are being paid an average of £22.5 per hour for the online tuitions across the United Kingdom. It has also been found by the survey that the rural cities are paying a bit more to the online tutors than that of the others.
Nobody actually can give the idea of how much an online tutor should charge for his/her service. It is all up to them. All that can be suggested to the online tutors is that they need to balance between the two things; one is that they should not undervalue themselves and the second thing is that they must also not let the students turn away. Actually, it is very difficult to maintain the balance between these two things but the fact is that there is, unfortunately, no other formula which can be applied to figure out the price per hour of online tutoring. However, keeping all these things in mind, a little guidance can be offered to the online tutor about how they can decide their hourly rate. Qualification, Location and the subjects offered are the three most important factors that should be considered for determining the price per hour of tutoring. Some of the other important factors that should be assumed while setting up the hourly price are:-
Education and skills: The level of education and the degree of skills are the most important things for a tutor to be considered for setting up the hourly price.
A tutor should firstly know about his/her personal skills of teaching and make those skills the base of determining the price per hour. The highly educated tutors usually expect much more money that the other tutors but sometimes even the highly educated tutors do not have good skills in teaching. Also, the tutors with low education can expect a bit higher amount of money if they have advanced skills in teaching. Thus, both the level of education and the advancement of personal skills should be considered for deciding the price for tutoring.
Experience: It is a human tendency that the experienced people expect a bit more than the people having less or no experience. The reason behind this is that the experience makes people perfect. The higher the experience is, the more perfect the people are. The tutors, who have less or no experience of teaching, should not set their prices too high as they can charge more after having some experience. The experience of teaching makes the skills more advanced and more effective which are helpful for the students. Thus, the tutors can charge as much as their experience is.
Availability of tutors and the subjects offered: The tutors should think about the availability of the other online tutors and the availability of the subjects offered before they decide the rate for tutoring. If there are many tutors available for the students, then they should not charge much. If the other available tutors do not have many levels of education, skills and experience, then this is the most beneficial thing for the tutor who is having more experience and grown skills. The tutors with a bit more experience and a bit higher level of education can charge even more than that of the other tutors even if there are a lot of many tutors available.
Also, the tutors should consider the subject offered while deciding the price for tutoring. For example; the tutor offering online tutoring in science and maths can charge a bit more than the tutors who offer English subject.
Also, the tutors can charge the highest if the subject that they offer is rarely offered but highly demanded. For example; a tutor is offering financing subject which is very hard, but the tutor teaches in such a way that the students learn the subject easily. Also, there are not other tutors available who offer finance. In this case, the tutor can charge as much as he/she wants as people will get ready to pay because there are no other tutors available who offer this subject.
Thus, it can be said that the availability of the tutors and the subject which the tutors offer are the two very important things that should be examined by the tutors before determining the price for online tutoring.
The requirement of Tuition: The level of requirement of tuitions is another factor which must be acknowledged by the tutors before setting up the tuition price. The tutors should firstly know about how much the requirement is. The online tutors can charge more if there is a huge requirement of the online tutors but the tutors should not charge high amount if there is not much requirement of the online tutors. For example; there is a huge requirement of the tutors who offer a master degree in physics. Hence, they can charge as much as they want. On the other hand, there is not much requirement of the tutors who offer a secondary level of maths as there are already a lot. Hence, those tutors should not charge a high amount of rates for tutoring.
Designation: The designation of the online tutors can also be considered for determining the prices for online tutoring. The students often notice the designation of the online tutors. For example; the online tutors who are teachers in a primary, secondary or higher secondary school, should not charge high. The online tutors, who are lecturers in a college or somewhere else, can charge a higher amount of money. The reason behind is that the students usually prefer lecturers more than the ordinary teachers.
Materials Availability: The online tutors should know about how much of material they have for teaching their students before setting up the price for tutoring. The tutors can charge a bit more if they have a lot of material to provide the students so that they can learn. They online tutors should not charge much if they do not have enough study material regarding the subject. For example; if a tutor has all the related notes, soft copies, videos, different ideas and related unique examples, then the tutor can charge more than that of the other tutors how do not have much material.
Time Flexibility: Time flexibility is the most important thing for online tutoring as it is not face to face. The online tutors should have a flexible schedule as there are a number of students and all the students do not get free at the same time. All the students who desire to learn, prefer different timings to learn and hence the online tutors should have a flexible time to teach them.
Marketing: The marketing of the tutors can be another factor which can be considered by the tutors before determining the prices per hour. The tutors who are more famous can charge more even if they do not have many skills and do not have much material available with them. For example; there is a very famous academy named “Khan Academy” that provides online tutors. This academy can offer as much price as it wants as it is already much famous among people. Even if this Academy has provided an online tutor that does not have much experience and does not have much tutoring skills, still they can charge as much as they want. Also, people will get ready to pay them as this is a highly reputed academy.
Parents’ Perspectives and Requirements: Sometimes the parents of the students have different requirement for their children which should not be neglected by the tutors. For example; some of the parents require such a tutor for their children who teaches not more than 3 or 4 students as there will be much more disturbance if there are more students in the tuition class.
Also, some of the parents require such a tutor for their child who can teach their child some of the extra subjects which are not there in the syllabus. Thus, all the parents have different requirements of tutors for their children. The tutors who fulfill all these requirements can charge a bit more than the tutors who do not fulfill these requirements of the parents. Thus, it can be said that the perspectives of the parents are also an important factor that should be kept in mind before deciding their hourly rate.
